Week 9 QB Streaming for 1-QB and 2-QB Leagues

QB streaming advice in 1-QB and 2-QB leagues for Week 9 of the 2017 fantasy football season.

Editor’s note: This article was originally published on Thursday and revised to reflect the Deshaun Watson injury.

Week 8 QB Streaming Recap

Unfortunately we begin this article on a somber note — Deshaun Watson suffered a non-contact ACL tear in practice as this was being published. Whether you watched Watson as a Texans’ fan, a fantasy player, or as an all-around football fan, you were rooting for this rookie. It’s a devastating loss to the Texans and fans of the game, but it’s safe to say no matter what side of the ball you’re on – you’re still rooting for him. After such a strong start to his NFL career, his return gives us something to eagerly anticipate already for 2018.

Watson’s last game of the season was a great QB battle between him and Russell Wilson, who both put up season high numbers. Also last week, the trade deadline created its own Twitter fever. Jimmy Garoppolo was traded to the 49ers, opening the door for yet another QB controversy. Rounding out the QB commotion, Andrew Luck‘s return to the football field will definitively not be in 2017. The Colts have officially placed him on IR due to his continued soreness in his surgically-repaired throwing shoulder.

And then there’s my Week 8 streamers, who did me proud with Andy Dalton and Josh McCown producing top-five fantasy quarterback numbers and Tyrod Taylor rounding out the top 10. Matt Moore will likely be the last Dolphins’ quarterback you see me recommend this season.

Status QB FanDuel Points QB Rank
1QB Option 1 Andy Dalton 18.7 13
1QB Option 2 Tyrod Taylor 16.7 10
2QB Option 1 Josh McCown 18.3 4
2QB Option 2 Matt Moore 5 27

After a tumultuous Week 8, Week 9 has high hopes of producing some more entertaining matchups. Six teams are on bye, and the pickings are slim, which leaves the door wide open for a star sleeper to help secure your win.

QB STREAMING ADVICE FOR WEEK 9

1QB Option 1: Jared Goff vs. Giants

Rostered: 48%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 15.4

FanDuel Salary: $7,600

Though his numbers have slightly regressed from the season’s start, Jared Goff has proven to be effective in favorable matchups, which makes his Week 9 matchup against the NY Giants very enticing. The Giants defense is surrendering an average of over 250 yards per game and will be without star cornerback Janoris Jenkins this week for violating team rules. Though both teams are coming off a bye, the Giants are averaging the fifth-most fantasy points per game to QBs while the Rams are giving up the third-fewest fantasy points to team defenses. With so many teams on bye and Goff averaging 17.6 fantasy points per game, he’s an ideal streamer for Week 9.

1QB Option 3: Tyrod Taylor vs. Jets

Rostered: 62%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 18.2

FanDuel Salary: $7,500

The TNF Josh McCown/Tyrod Taylor matchup is this particular quarterback streamer/writer’s dream. Both should have productive games, but in order to continue to give you value, I’m going to avoid picking McCown for the third straight week while continuing to ride out the Tyrod Taylor train. Despite the Bills’ run-heavy offense, Taylor has had at least one touchdown in five straight games. And I can’t stress enough how helpful his running game can be for potential streamers – having rushed six or more times in every game this season but one. On the other side, the Jets defense has allowed 24-plus points in each of their last three straight losses. While Taylor’s road record isn’t ideal, the trade for Kelvin Benjamin may reinvigorate the offense in this division showdown.

2QB Option 1: Jacoby Brissett vs. Texans

Rostered: 11%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 16.1

FanDuel Salary: $6,500

One takeaway from the shootout we oohed and aahed over at Seattle vs. Houston is that the Houston defense cannot stop the passing game. Russell Wilson obliterated them, passing for over 450 yards and three TDs. Meanwhile, Jacoby Brissett is coming off of one of his best games of the season, has put up double-digit fantasy numbers in each of his last six games, and had 200-plus passing yards in five of them.

Again, streamers should seek quarterbacks who can run. Brissett has also had at least 20 rushing yards in three of his six starts and three rushing TDs. Meanwhile, the Texans rank 22nd in pass defense since J.J. Watt went down. And with Tom Savage again the starter for the Texans,1 Brissett will likely have plenty of time on the field.  While it’s a bit of a risk, it’s an ideal pick for 2QB leagues.

2QB Option 2: Brett Hundley vs. Detroit

Rostered: 9%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: N/A*

FanDuel Salary: $6,300

It hurts to give him another shot, but at the end of the day Brett Hundley is still a Green Bay Packer — and the Pack does not stay stagnant. While Hundley had a scary showing, bringing Halloween to Lambeau in Week 7 by throwing for just 87 yards against the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay has had two weeks to prepare him for his next start, once again in Lambeau, on Monday night. A positive takeaway from Week 7’s performance is that Hundley had 44 yards on the ground and a rushing score, meaning he should generally have a decent floor in more favorable matchups. Though I wouldn’t consider this week’s matchup against Detroit favorable, one can hope the Packers have figured out a way to leverage Hundley’s skills in the past two weeks. Regardless, the Packers’ surrounding pieces are still among the best in the league. And with the slim pickings for Week 9, Hundley is worthy of a second chance as a two-QB hail mary attempt.
