The 2019 RotoViz Fantasy Football Rookie Tournament

The 2019 RotoViz fantasy football rookie tournaments are here! This battle royale features 16 worthy rookie running backs and 16 tantalizing rookie wide receivers, but only one of each will remain at the end of this year’s four-round melee.

After months of articles and podcasts cutting up every prospect in the class, our team took the analysis to the next level by comparing players to each other head-to-head style. Over a dozen of our analysts served on the voting committee. Some matchups were blowouts and others were decided by a single vote. Our semi-scientific process for determining a winner:

  • RotoViz research and metrics
  • Projected chance of future fantasy success
  • Cost to acquire each player in rookie drafts
  • Any additional criteria the analysts wanted to use

The seeding for this tournament was generated by using rookie ADP from various sites in late March before we began voting. It is true that seeding the tournament in a more strategic way could have produced different outcomes which could have allowed me to cherry-pick players our team is enamored with and shine extra attention on them, especially in the first round or two (for example, I would’ve loved to avoid pairing Parris Campbell and Andy Isabella in the first round of the wide receiver bracket). However, I wanted tournament seeding which reflected the community view of the class.

How can you use this tournament to inform your rookie draft strategic planning? Being crowned champion in either bracket represents an endorsement from RotoViz as being a worthy draft day target. Maneuvering your draft position in the first round of your league’s draft to acquire these players is a RotoViz-approved strategy. It’s not just about the champions, though. You will notice a few upsets, especially in the running back tournament – when you see these it means our team is higher (as a group) on that player that won versus the community view, so don’t be afraid to swerve a little and grab those players a little early if you’re convinced they need to be wearing your fantasy team’s colors in 2019.
