Best Ball Leaderboard: MVP! MVP!

Rest of Season RB Ranks

The Best Ball Leaderboard provides a look at player production and how it translates into points, starts, and wins for your best ball team.

The 2017 best ball season is now over, and I’m happy to announce who won each position on our leaderboard and the MVP for the season. But first I want to take a moment to thank each of you who have read this series and shared my best ball journey with me this year. I also want to thank my partner for this series Dave Caban who did the hard work of providing the numbers for our leaderboard.

Our cover this week is Todd Gurley, who over the last two weeks single-handedly decided who won and who didn’t in many seasonal formats. It was a historic performance in best ball as well as his win percentage jumped from 23 percent to 31 percent, a number that smashes David Johnson’s incredible 27 percent from 2016 and Devonte Freeman’s 28 percent from 2015.

So Todd Gurley, in what should be no surprise, is our MVP for 2017!

Here are the final results for each position for 2017 with some key points on lessons learned.

  • Carson Wentz and Russell Wilson tied for first place on our leaderboards. Wilson had been the third-best fantasy QB just two years ago and many seemed to forget how hobbled he was in 2016. This created a great buying opportunity. On the other hand, I would be wary as Wentz tries to duplicate his results, especially if his underrated mobility is limited.

  • Le’Veon Bell finished second on our leaderboard. If you drafted him in the first round and took Gurley in the second – a frequently available pairing if you had the No. 2 pick – you were well ahead of the field.1 This is one of the biggest takeaways for me on the season: to make sure even your first- and second-round picks have upside. Both Gurley and DeAndre Hopkins had been first-round picks the year before. Their talent wasn’t in question as much as their situations. Early round players who underperformed their ADP and might be similar values in 2018 are Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Devonte Freeman and T.Y. Hilton.

  • DeAndre Hopkins was a true dominator this year. He wins over Antonio Brown. Adam Thielen and Marvin Jones both had top-ten finishes despite not being drafted before Round 10 in most drafts. You also find a second group of WR2s later in drafts each year, and this can be very fertile ground.

  • The Jaguars held off the Ravens for first place on our leaderboard although the Ravens ended up on 14 percent of winning teams to the Jaguars 12 percent. Don’t draft defenses early and look for opportunities in the 17th round for teams primed to have a better season.

Finally, I want to also share my personal results for the year. If you have followed my journey, you know I had missed profitability my first two years and realized I needed to study harder if I wanted to reverse that trend in 2017. That is my biggest takeaway I can share. Whether  you had good results or not, constantly review your process and dig through the numbers behind the games you play. Look for edges and don’t be afraid to think differently than the field, and remember that people can overreact to what worked recently. That often provides a great opportunity to differentiate for those who are willing to take advantage of group think.

There is always room for improvement, and I am already looking for ways to do so and to share with all of you. These best ball leagues are filled with a ton of talented people, and it takes hard work and determination to be good at them. Thanks again to all for walking with me on this journey. I couldn’t be more stoked for 2018!
