One of the biggest mistakes novice fantasy players make is reaching too early in a draft for a team defense. This is a mistake for several reasons, but most importantly because you can stream the position, picking up a defense with a great matchup each week.
In this series, I’ll be highlighting the best defensive matchups with an emphasis on defenses that should be available in most leagues.
BEST STREAMING DEFENSES IN WEEK 5
New York Jets
This is the fourth straight week the New York Jets are still my top streaming option, but they are still the in the top five of defenses in total fantasy points scored yet they remain only 28 percent owned in ESPN leagues. Most of their points came in the monster win against Detroit in Week 1, but Avery Williamson is a beast, the Jets had two sacks, an interception, and two fumbles recovered last week. They have a very real chance of a pick six this week against Case Keenum and the Broncos who just allowed four sacks and an interception to the Chiefs porous defense. The Jets have easy matchups all season, just let it ride.
The Titans are tied for seventh in total fantasy points this far in the season, and are facing the Bills, who are the second lowest scoring offense in the NFL, and have the lowest Vegas-implied total this week. The Titans are going to miss Safety Kenny Vaccaro but should have no problems stopping the Bills. Last week the Bills gave up seven sacks, two interceptions, one fumble recovered and a partridge in a pear tree to the Green Bay Packers. The Titans are less than 40 percent owned.
San Francisco 49ers
The Niners held the Los Angeles Chargers in check for most of the game last week and opened the game with an Antone Exum pick six. They should have no problem against rookie Josh Rosen and the anemic Cardinals. The Cardinals are the worst scoring offense in the league. My only hesitation is I wouldn’t want the Niners the next week against the Packers or in Week 7 against the Rams.
