Is Ryan Nassib More Eli Manning, or Kyle Orton?

In an effort to try to get through remaining similarity scores for prospects I haven’t hit yet, I decided to post the similarity scores for Ryan Nassib.  I would characterize Nassib’s comps as sort of borderline good quarterbacks, and that even applies to the very best of his comps.  Basically, all of the guys that Nassib is similar to are guys that would ignite debates if their names were mentioned in a sports bar.  To illustrate this, let’s go through the comp table:

NAME HT WT TM Season G CMP% PYDS TD/G INT/G Y/A RYDS Career G Career YDS Career TD/INT
Ryan Nassib 74 227.00 Syracuse 2012 13 0.62 288.38 2 0.77 7.96 10.92 46 9190 2.50
NAME HT WT TM Season G CMP% PYDS TD/G INT/G Y/A RYDS Career G Career YDS Career TD/INT
Eli Manning 77 221.00 Mississippi 2003 13 0.62 276.92 2.23 0.77 8.16 -2.15 43 10119 2.31
Jay Cutler 75 226.00 Vanderbilt 2005 11 0.59 279.36 1.91 0.82 6.65 19.55 45 8697 1.64
Charlie Frye 76 225.00 Akron 2004 11 0.64 238.45 1.64 0.73 7.58 -0.55 46 11049 2.00
Zac Dysert 75 231.00 Miami (OH) 2012 12 0.63 290.25 2.08 1.00 7.26 22.08 45 12013 1.43
Carson Palmer 77 232.00 Southern California 2002 13 0.63 303.23 2.54 0.77 8.06 -9.38 36 9423 1.55
Kyle Orton 76 233.00 Purdue 2004 11 0.61 280.91 2.82 0.45 7.94 10.18 42 8918 2.54
Kirk Cousins 75 214.00 Michigan State 2011 14 0.64 236.86 1.79 0.71 7.91 -2.79 43 9131 2.20

If I were to try to describe a type of quarterback that is similar to Nassib, it would be a multi-year starter that is decent on things like completion percentage and yards per attempt, but also not great.  After starting 40+ college games, a QB’s completion percentage probably says at least a little about the QB and you can see from the comp list that even the best of Nassib’s comps are guys that hovered in the low 60s in terms of completion percent as pros.  Here’s a table which shows the career completion percent of Nassib’s comps:

Player Career NFL Comp %
Carson Palmer 63%
Eli Manning 59%
Jay Cutler 61%
Charlie Frye 62%
Kyle Orton 58%

That doesn’t mean that Nassib couldn’t be a good QB.  In fact, if you were guaranteed to get even Jay Cutler out of Nassib, you would probably take him with a high pick.  But the problem is that the expected value of taking Nassib is also probably affected by the lower limit of his comps which includes more back-up type QBs like Kyle Orton and Charlie Frye.
