Injuries are starting to mount as the NBA season moves on. There are a few spots in this six-game daily fantasy basketball slate where we can exploit matchups due to missing players. Make sure to listen to the On the Daily podcast for more advice throughout the week.
Daily Fantasy Basketball Plays of the Day
John Wall vs BOS- $10,700 on FD, $9,400 on DK
His FanDuel price is in a range that makes him a pass (try my next pick instead). On DraftKings I can roll with Wall after he’s posted at least 45 DK points in seven of his past 10 games, and will be facing a Celtics team that will be without Avery Bradley. The Celtics do a good job of covering up the defensive limitations of Isiah Thomas, but they’ll be without his ballhawking backcourt mate for the contest. Wall should be able to take advantage of Thomas on the possessions he gets to line up against him, considering Thomas is currently ranked last among point guards in defensive real plus-minus.
Kyle Lowry vs SAS- $8,400 on FD, $8,800 on DK
Lowry is the preferred option on FanDuel where he’s the fifth-highest priced point guard on the slate. That seems a bit low with DeMar DeRozan being out for tonight’s game against the Spurs. Lowry hasn’t blown up in spots where DeRozan has been forced to miss the game, but the bump is large enough to take a look.
DeRozan is taking a career-high 21.3 field goal attempts per game this season, which leaves a lot left on the table for the rest of the Raptors crew to soak up. Lowry has struggled with his efficiency as of late, but you bet on regression to the mean with superstars.
Joe Ingles @ DEN- $4,200 on FD, $4,900 on DK
Who’s ranked second in the NBA in 3-point percentage? If you guessed Joe Ingles you would be correct. The Australian has been lights out from deep this season and has gotten a substantial minutes boost over the past three games with Rodney Hood missing time. Ingles is a safe cash option as he’s scored at least 23 FD points in his last three games, which is exactly what you’re looking for if you’re punting the position. His production has mostly relied on his peripheral stats, but his efficient shooting should lead to him retaining his high floor.
Norman Powell vs SAS- $3,900 on FD, $3,400 on DK
As you may have heard, DeRozan will be missing tonight’s game against the Spurs. That leaves a big hole that both Terrence Ross and Powell will be filling. With Powell’s athleticism and defensive acumen it would make sense for him to get a bit more court time than usual, which should give him enough time to eclipse value.
The issue is that you can’t lock in Powell for these minutes and that a good portion of this production has come in garbage time. But I still think he makes for a good GPP play, and has a strong chance of getting the opportunity.
Kawhi Leonard @ TOR- $10,100 on FD, $9,200 on DK
The news, as of now, is that the hand injury that kept Leonard out of Monday’s game shouldn’t keep him out of tonight’s game. But, obviously, keep an eye out to make sure that he is getting the start. Leonard has been on fire over the past six games, shooting 61 percent from the field in those contests. His crazy efficiency has led to some monster fantasy production with his last three games all being over 50 DK points. The Raptors don’t have a strong wing defender.
Gordon Hayward @ DEN- $7,400 on FD, $7,200 on DK
When looking at the NBA Game Splits App I checked to see what Hayward’s numbers were in games where the over/under has been above 210. I was a bit surprised at what I found:
So, not much to go on with that stat, but this line looks like a good thing for Hayward and the Jazz players. Hayward has scored at least 35 DK points in five of his past seven games and gets to go up against the 29th ranked defense in the league. He’s a great play on both sites.
Markieff Morris vs BOS- $6,400 on FD, $6,300 on DK
As the Wizards have taken off so has Morris. He’s been Mr. Reliable, posting at least 30 DK points in seven of his last eight games. Part of that jump in production has been on the boards; he’s averaging over nine rebounds in his last eight games. That type of production has complemented his hot shooting, which makes him an intriguing pick at either forward spot.
David Lee @ TOR- $5,100 on FD, $5,900 on DK
With Pau Gasol out Lee has played 25 minutes in his last three games. In those three games he has averaged 13 points and over 11 rebounds. He’s had a major price bump that doesn’t make him the steal he once was, but his production and minutes look remain consistent even if he continues to come off the bench for the team.
Jahlil Okafor vs LAC- $4,600 on FD, $5,200 on DK
Joel Embiid is going to miss tonight’s game against the Clippers because of a knee contusion, giving Okafor the green light and the minutes to soak up in his absence. Okafor has shown he’s produced in the game’s that Embiid has missed this season:
He’s not a lock, but his minutes will provide a solid floor and he should be able to at least return value.
Robin Lopez @ ORL- $4,600 on FD, $4,500 on DK
Another strong cash game option. Rolo has posted at least 22 DK points in his past seven games and his price has barely moved. The problem with Lopez is that there are certain teams where he doesn’t match up as well and is run off the floor, lowering his minutes. He shouldn’t have that problem against the front court-heavy Magic. The limited upside of Lopez makes him much more useful in cash game lineups.
