QB Streaming Week 5: Navigating the Early Byes

QB streaming advice for Week 5 of the 2017 fantasy football season.

Week 4 QB Streaming Recap

With another heart wrenching week of football, Marcus Mariota and Derek Carr fell victim to the injury bug, while Matt Ryan and Ben Roethlisberger owners were distraught over poor performances. The New England Patriots defense continued to make the opposing team’s offense look like a Super Bowl contender (Jameis Winston owners, get excited) and we all learned to avoid starting a quarterback facing Buffalo’s defense.

As for my Week 4 picks, Deshaun Watson took the QB1 crown and continues to pay high dividends for the Texans and fantasy owners. Andy Dalton turned in a second consecutive quality performance. Tyrod Taylor pulled out an upset for the Bills, but not so much for fantasy owners, and Blake Bortles returned to his mid/low tier.

Status QB FanDuel Points QB Rank
1QB Option 1 Andy Dalton 28.3 3
1QB Option 2 Tyrod Taylor 12.5 18
2QB Option 1 Deshaun Watson 34.7 1
2QB Option 2 Blake Bortles 12.4 19

Entering the fifth week of the season, bye weeks are upon us. Now more than ever, quarterback streaming can become an integral component in your championship hopes. So whether you’re missing Drew Brees, still struggling with the absence of Andrew Luck, or in need of the next under-the-radar blowup performance, here are your options for Week 5.

Game Level Similarity Projections are taken from Dave Caban’s model. The Player Projection Distributions are taken from the site’s GLSP app. These are great sources to cross check for the range of likely QB outcomes.

QB Streaming Advice for Week 5

1QB Option 1: Eli Manning vs. Chargers

Rostered: 60%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 16

FanDuel Salary: $7,000

It has to happen sometime right? And I think Week 5 is finally Eli Manning’s week. A vast improvement from the start of the season, Manning had 288 yards, two touchdowns, and zero (!!) interceptions in Sunday’s 25-23 loss to the Buccaneers. Manning even rushed for 22 yards and a touchdown – his first since 2014. Although the Giants remain winless, Manning managed to spread the ball around, getting it to Evan Engram, Brandon Marshall, and Sterling Shepard, who all ended up with five-plus catches. Though he started the season as a fantasy disappointment, it seems like the offense may be starting to click enough for Manning to lead his team to their first win against the LA Chargers in Week 5.

The Chargers defense looked sufficiently lost in their Week 4 loss to the Eagles, yielding 16 plays of 10-plus yards, allowing the Eagles to convert 56 percent of their third-downs, and failing to create a turnover for the third straight week. This ideal matchup should help Manning continue his production and deliver a much-needed win for fantasy streamers.

1QB Option 2: Tyrod Taylor vs. Bengals

Rostered: 45%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 16

FanDuel Salary: $7,000

Though he finished QB18 in fantasy last week, Tyrod Taylor continued to reign supreme when it comes to efficiency. Taylor completed 12 of 20 passes for 182 yards, one touchdown, and no turnovers in a major upset win over the Falcons. Though efficiency doesn’t win fantasy games, his Week 5 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals might.1

Taylor has run at least seven times in each of his first four games, which fantasy owners appreciate as a welcomed bonus. His passing efficiency has helped the Bills develop a bit of a hot streak, so there’s no reason to deviate from the game plan. The Bengals defense presents a tough matchup, but as Taylor continues to exceed GLSP projections, I’m going to give him the nod in an otherwise bleak week. The Bengals thrive off the strength of their cornerbacks, but the Bills’ methods of attack and their strong rushing game should be able to neutralize them and give Taylor time to shine.

2QB Option 1: Deshaun Watson vs. Chiefs

Rostered: 36%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 18.8

FanDuel Salary: $7,500

Our Cinderella story thus far continues to be Deshaun Watson. In a follow-up performance to the near upset against the New England Patriots, Watson threw for 283 yards, scored five TDs (four passing, one rushing), and tossed one INT in Sunday’s 57-14 win over the Tennessee Titans. It seems like a distant memory in which Houston was getting mauled by the Jaguars defense with Tom Savage at the helm, but Watson has reinvigorated this Houston offense, giving his star talent DeAndre Hopkins, and even Will Fuller, the passes they’ve been waiting for.

While Watson doesn’t have the most ideal matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, I am confident that he’s not a QB1 and done. This matchup will really test the rookie and should be a good barometer of where the franchise QB’s talents lie. No doubt there will be times of struggle, but if he can put together a decent performance versus a tough defense in prime time, I would make the case that he should be a season-long must start (though only 36% of Yahoo owners currently agree).

2QB Option 2: Jacoby Brissett vs. 49ers

Rostered: 7%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 18

FanDuel Salary: $7,000

After making me look good with my pick in Week 3, Jacoby Brissett followed up his impressive performance with a more underwhelming one in Week 4 in the 46-18 loss at the Seahawks. Brissett passed for 157 yards, one TD, and one INT. Fortunately for bye week victims, this week’s matchup against the 49ers is much more stream-worthy. There’s no doubt the 49ers have a stout defensive line, but since their offense can’t stay on the field – as seen in their overtime loss to the Cardinals last week – the Colts offense should get plenty of opportunities. Brissett is finding comfort with his offense as each week passes. While he will be challenged, he should be able to provide sufficient production off the wire for 2QB leagues.

Bonus: Though it’s a risky call, those who have kept Sam Bradford on the bench should monitor the situation closely this week. Bradford was a welcomed surprise in Week 1, passing for over 300 yards and 3 TDs. Even without Dalvin Cook, the Vikings still have depth at running back (McKinnon has 7 catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns in his last two games vs Chicago) and a retooled offensive line. Bradford knows how to leverage his offensive weapons and spread out the ball and is a must start against the Bears on Monday Night Football should he be healthy enough to play. His injury is gauged mainly on pain tolerance, so if he does get the start, he shouldn’t be restricted in production.

However, I must warn you, as this is the Monday Night game, do not leave yourself in a precarious position. Make sure you have Keenum rostered, because there’s obviously a chance Bradford doesn’t play. Keenum wouldn’t be my top choice this week, which is why this is included as an aside, but I think he can still give you a decent start if you wanted to try to chase Bradford’s potential. High upside, high risk.

  1. The Bengals defense is inconsistent but shouldn’t be overlooked. Cincinnati held Joe Flacco and DeShone Kizer to under seven fantasy points, while allowing Deshaun Watson and Aaron Rodgers to pass for a combined 400 yards.  (back)

2019 Week 3 Tight End Streamers: Welcome to the Wasteland

It didn’t take long, but Week 3 marks the first visit to the tight end wasteland of the 2019 season. The options are not great, especially given Darren Waller’s ascension to “every week starter” status following his TE8 finish in Week 2. For the second week in a row, Waller

Kyler Murray Is About to Explode

Kyler Murray currently leads the league in passing attempts and has thrown for 657 yards. Unfortunately, he’s struggled to find the end zone through the air and has left fantasy owners disappointed with only 17 rushing yards. The rookie phenom sits at QB13 through two weeks. All that is about
