Week 7 QB Streaming for 1-QB and 2-QB Leagues

QB streaming advice in 1-QB and 2-QB leagues for Week 7 of the 2017 fantasy football season.

Week 6 QB Streaming Recap

We’re almost halfway through the season,1 and surprise, we’re talking about injuries. Andrew Luck had “a minor setback” in his return, Aaron Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone, and Sam Bradford is still working on a return to the field.

The leader in fantasy points this week was the Saints defense, which, with five sacks, three interceptions, two fumbles and three touchdowns, was a streamer’s dream and Detroit’s demise. Meanwhile, the New England Patriots defense set the record for six straight weeks of allowing a quarterback to throw for over 300 yards.

As for my performance, three of my Week 6 picks produced top-15 fantasy quarterback numbers. Josh McCown had his best week yet, Trevor Siemian threw for a career-high 376 yards (but still lost to the 0-5 Giants), while Jacoby Brissett and Case Keenum delivered the same number of FanDuel points. What set Brissett apart in the rankings were his 15 yards on the ground and zero turnovers (Keenum had one).

Status QB FanDuel Points QB Rank
1QB Option 1 Trevor Siemian 18 10
1QB Option 2 Josh McCown 22 6
2QB Option 1 Jacoby Brissett 14 14
2QB Option 2 Case Keenum 14 19

And so we tackle Week 7. With just two teams on bye but six more still struggling with injury or inconsistency at QB, this week’s matchups should lead to another interesting week.

Game Level Similarity Projections are taken from Dave Caban’s model. The Player Projection Distributions are taken from the site’s GLSP app. These are great sources to cross check for the range of likely QB outcomes.

1QB Option 1: Tyrod Taylor vs. Buccaneers

Rostered: 38%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 17

FanDuel Salary: $7,000

Although part of me still remembers the Week 5 disappointment, I’m getting back on the Tyrod Train for this week. And not because of Tyrod Taylor’s laundry list of offensive weapons (with Charles Clay out and Jordan Matthews out or limited, there aren’t any) or great wall of an offensive line (there isn’t one). What’s working for our QB this week: the Bills’ defense and Taylor’s matchup. The Buffalo defense has been one of the strongest in the NFL this season, leaving Taylor with plenty of playing time. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers proved last Sunday against the Cardinals that they can’t get to the quarterback and can’t defend the pass game if someone paid them to (oh, wait).

Since their Week 1 bye, the Buccaneers have allowed Eli Manning, Carson Palmer and Case Keenum to score at least 21 points each. They’re allowing almost 20 fantasy points per game to the opposing QB. That’s in addition to allowing the now-benched Mike Glennon to pass for 300 yards and a TD in Week 2. Despite his lack of target depth, Taylor’s rushing ability gives him great upside. Through five games, he’s rushed 32 times for 121 yards. He hasn’t put up QB1 numbers just yet, but he hasn’t had single-digit fantasy numbers either. While I don’t expect him to produce the same numbers that Palmer put up against the Buccaneers last week, he is a solid streaming option for those singing the bye week blues.

1QB Option 2: Jared Goff vs. Cardinals

Rostered: 39%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 13.8

FanDuel Salary: $7,300

After starting off the season strong, Jared Goff has seemingly lost his mojo, albeit against strong Jaguars and Seahawks defenses. Expect a comeback from the sophomore against a Cardinals defense that let the king of turnovers, Ryan Fitzpatrick, put up a top-five QB finish (almost leading his team back from a 31-0 deficit). Arizona’s pass defense has allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game to the quarterback position. Meanwhile, Goff and the Rams offense have shown a drastic improvement from last season, and Goff had passed for over 200 yards each week until this past Sunday. Playing at home, Goff is a solid streaming option in Week 7.

2QB Option 1: Josh McCown vs. Dolphins

Rostered: 8%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: 16.3

FanDuel Salary: $7,000

Josh McCown delivered his best fantasy production value thus far in Week 6 against the Patriots. Throwing for over 350 yards, this was also the third game (second in a row) where McCown had two or more TD passes, proving that he has the potential to be a valuable QB1 streamer in favorable matchups. While this matchup isn’t as ideal, given the options I’ll put my trust in McCown to do enough to be a worthwhile streamer here.

While the Miami defense has allowed just six passing TDs through five games, they also have just one pick on the season. The Jets have shown that they can compete when others had anticipated otherwise. And in a surprisingly competitive AFC East, these are the must-win games. McCown is worth the risk for those in two-QB formats with few options.

2QB Option 2: Brett Hundley vs. Saints

Rostered: 2%

Game-Level Similarity Projection: N/A*

FanDuel Salary: $6,500

Due to Aaron Rodgers’ tragic collarbone injury that will likely put him out for the year, Brett Hundley instantly became one of the most sought after free agent fantasy quarterback pickups of the week. Hundley took over for Rodgers in Week 6 to throw for three interceptions against a tough Minnesota defense that sacked him four times. Though Hundley won’t get much relief in those categories against a Saints squad ranked fifth in interceptions and 10th in sacks, there are a few silver linings that make this an interesting matchup to stream.

The Saints pass defense has vastly improved, but they’re still not a serious threat. New Orleans is ranked 28th against the pass and have allowed three passing TDs each to Sam Bradford, Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford through five games. While three TDs may be wishful thinking, Hundley still has a lot of playmakers at his disposal to get the job done. After a full week of first-team reps, expect Hundley to be more comfortable and show off his rushing ability. Tread lightly, but Hundley is a high risk, high reward QB2 start.
