The NFL is back, and I couldn’t be more excited. After an epic slate of games on Sunday, owners must push the right buttons to pull out the victory on Monday night. The injury reports for the Denver Broncos could make this tricky. One young wideout who is primed to make a jump this year could miss the season opener.
Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton (shoulder) is questionable to play on Monday Night Football against the Titans. Sutton wasn’t able to practice on Saturday and was originally listed as doubtful, though head coach Vic Fangio said “he has made great strides” and “is questionable in the truest sense.” That’s simply not something Sutton’s fantasy managers can count on, considering the game is the last one on the Week 1 slate. Rookie receiver Jerry Jeudy would get a boost in targets if Sutton can’t go.
If you’re a Sutton owner, you have a tough decision to make. If you’re a Jeudy owner, this could be the day your rookie WR starts to establish his legend.
Can Jerry Jeudy Provide a Monday Night Miracle?
If you’ve followed college football for any length of time, you know how uber-productive Jeudy was during his time at Alabama, a school that continues to churn out elite wide receivers. Jeudy was the 15th overall selection and the second wide receiver drafted behind his college teammate Henry Ruggs.
Ruggs offered glimpses of stardom in his debut. Can Jeudy do better? He was the standout in college.
The numbers are impressive even if his Dominator Rating wasn’t. Curtis Patrick explained why we shouldn’t hold his market share numbers against him.
Along with substantial production numbers, his sims using the Prospect Box Score Scout are also impressive. While his closest comps again raise a few minor flags, names like Odell Beckham Jr., Calvin Ridley, and Brandin Cooks immediately jump off the page.
You’d certainly take Beckham’s historic rookie season . . . or Ridley’s 2020 Week 1.1
Potential Week 1 Option
Knowing Sutton is a longshot to play this weekend, and knowing fellow rookie K.J. Hamler is also listed as questionable, Jeudy could have a major role in his first professional game. His route running is next-level, and he’s drawn rave reviews from quarterback Drew Lock and the rest of his teammates, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Furthermore, according to our Strength of Schedule Streaming tool, wide receivers for the Broncos have the fourth-easiest schedule during opening weekend. The new-look Patriots weren’t able to take advantage, but consider what the Packers did yesterday. Aside from Sutton, there’s no proven NFL talent in the WR room. If you went RB heavy in your draft or are already searching after injuries to Kenny Golladay and Sutton, Jeudy makes an exciting gamble on Monday night.
