In the 2020 RotoViz Dynasty Workshop Series, dynasty fantasy football maven Curtis Patrick shares all the tips and tricks you need to make 2021 a winning season. Using his own dynasty portfolio as the case subject, Curtis will show you how to build your own Dynasty Command Center.

Dynasty Workshop Part 1: Getting Organized

The next thing you do is the most important thing you’ll do.

Deciding what that next thing is requires reflection, something I find that many don’t have the discipline for in the fantasy community. Instead, we drift ever forward, scatting from one activity to the next in chase of that next shot of dynasty dopamine in whatever form we can find. From forum chats and timeline scrolling, to mock drafts and rookie drafts, to trade talks, to quitting leagues, to talking about joining leagues, to actually joining leagues and drafting new teams, to playing in leagues, the never-ending current of activity can keep many from ever conducting a self-evaluation and personal strategic plan. If this sounds like you, you’re in the right place. If this doesn’t sound like you, flee from here, artificially intelligent thing.

Perhaps a quote from one of the profound thought leaders of yesteryear will center us on the task at hand.

I have great respect for the past. If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going. I have respect for the past, but I’m a person of the moment. I’m here, and I do my best to be completely centered at the place I’m at, then I go forward to the next place.

-Maya Angelou

Using a quote from one of the greatest poets of the 20th century and a renowned civil rights activist for a fantasy football column is probably, nay definitely, unnecessarily dramatic. However, the quote above is one of my personal favorites and it does apply to all facets of life, including games of strategy.

So, what does your past as a dynasty player look like? What did 2020 look like? How did you get to this place, this very place? Are you a winner? A loser? Mired down in mediocrity? Why is that the case? What will you do to continue your success? Will the things that worked for you in 2020 work in 2021? Were you just lucky? And if you were just lucky, are you humble enough to admit it and avoid overconfidence that could lead to years of future underperformance and flushing away buy-ins while you watch more talented and more dedicated opponents rack up titles and glory and bankroll?

I could pose infinite questions here, but I imagine for most of you the point has been made. You need to know why your 2020 went the way it went. In order to know how it went, you need to have an organized way of viewing your portfolio.

How to Organize Your Portfolio

Do you know how many leagues you’re in? Have you looked at the balance of formats? Your performance? Your investment and your return? It’s easy to build a portfolio tracker in Excel, Sheets, and other similar programs. Below is an example of how you might choose to display any information you’d like to be able to observe about your portfolio.
