Guillotine Leagues: How to Think About the Most Controversial Players in Fantasy

Shawn Siegele provides tactical insight for bidding in guillotine leagues and breaks down the future outlook for Mark Andrews, Stefon Diggs, Josh Allen, Dalton Kincaid, Darnell Mooney, Joe Mixon, and Zack Moss.

My favorite scoreboard-watching experience over the first couple of weeks has come in my Guillotine Leagues. Since every week is a must-win — or probably more accurately, a must-not-lose-big — you’re on the edge of your seat Sunday afternoons, waiting for your first starter to go off in a way that virtually guarantees you avoid the chop.

For the Stealing Bananas squad in Week 2, that player was James Cook, who gained 95 yards from scrimmage and scored three touchdowns on Thursday night. It was a good thing, too, as no other player in our eight-man lineup broke 12 points. Cooper Kupp and Tyjae Spears were injured in-game, joining Tee Higgins among the walking wounded.

Due to injuries we don’t have a viable starting lineup for Week 3, which means we’ll have to be more aggressive in bidding for chopped players than we might otherwise prefer to be.

The Overtime Teams Breeze Through

Colm and I had more success with our individual teams in the RotoViz Overtime league.

I was able to move through on the back of Breece Hall, DeVonta Smith, and, somewhat hilariously, Quentin Johnson, a player who wasn’t rostered on Sunday morning but went directly into my lineup with Jordan Addison out and the bench mostly full of RB stashes. Colm has been making the case for Johnston this offseason, so I’m sure he’d have been on this first if not for the arrival of baby Ryan to join the Kelly household last week.

Colm’s Have a Good One! squad easily advanced, as did Shawn’s Tennis Career, a team that’s having a lot more success than my actual tennis career.

The chopped team lost Puka Nacua in Week 1 and got the down fantasy performance from Josh Allen in Week 2. The McCaffrey and Nacua teams have both been chopped, illustrating the early impact of injuries. As a result, the first two QBs selected have already gone back into the pool.

If you’ve drafted any of these injured players in some of your favorite leagues and are looking for a new draft experience, Colm and I will be hosting a new league for the RotoViz community at some point in the next several weeks. To get involved, sign up at guillotineleagues.com and contact Colm (@OvertimeIreland), requesting to be put on the list.

In today’s exercise, I’m going to break down available players and discuss some bidding tactics. If you’re not involved in guillotine leagues but are interested in some of the more controversial players who struggled in Week 2, this piece is also for you. If you want to explore the waiver bidding process as it might relate to other formats as well, then this piece is for you.
