Good First Impressions: Rookie Tight Ends Winning Plaudits in Camp

Apparently, the great Oscar Wilde once said that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. This mantra has been taken onboard by a host of rookies this summer, with many first-year players wowing observers across the NFL. There are two rookie tight ends in particular that are impressing the people that matter, early in training camp. But how excited should we be about first-year TEs, given the historically slow development at this position? Let’s see, shall we?

Luke Musgrave, Green Bay Packers

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur singled Luke Musgrave out for praise recently, calling the former Oregon State player the “biggest fast guy” he’d ever seen. This is not the first time that Musgrave has impressed LaFleur since the team drafted him this past spring. Musgrave earned first-team reps back in June when his coach remarked that he has “an elite trait in that he can fly, and he’s a large target”.

Musgrave came into the NFL with an intriguing mix of athleticism and production, as you can see by some of his closest similar players over the last decade, courtesy of our Box Score Scout Tool.
