Three’s Company: Are Liam Coen and Jacksonville’s Three-Headed Backfield About to Take Over the NFL?

Kevin Szafraniec breaks down how the Jaguars’ trade of Tank Bigsby to the Eagles could affect the backfields in Jacksonville and Philadelphia moving forward.

Back in June, there were consistent rumblings that Travis Etienne could find himself in a new home for the 2025 season. The Jaguars had just selected two running backs in the NFL Draft, and Tank Bigsby was coming off a sophomore campaign in which he appeared to have shrugged off a disappointing rookie year.

However, when breaking down the Jaguars’ 2025 outlook, I suggested that perhaps the trade rumors were focused on the wrong Jacksonville RB after considering the archetype of backs Liam Coen found success with in Tampa Bay:

One characteristic that all three of Tampa Bay’s RBs shared last season was that they were above-average pass catchers. Tank Bigsby would appear to be the odd man out in Jacksonville if receiving talent is a requirement for seeing the field in Coen’s offense. The coach publicly shut down trade rumors swirling around Travis Etienne this offseason. Perhaps the chatter had merit but was just aimed toward the wrong veteran RB.

Even though it took a couple months, this exact situation came to fruition on Monday, as Bigsby was traded to Philadelphia for a fifth- and a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft.

So what does the trade mean for the players in each of these backfields? Let’s dive in and find out!
