News and Notes: Rueben Randle, Marshaun Coprich, and…Tom Brady?

Quick news and notes about the Philadelphia Eagles, rookie running backs, and drafting quarterbacks. Rueben Randle Says he’ll be starting for the Eagles this year. He’s probably right. NAME OFF TRGS TRGMS reEP reFPOE reFPOEPT Rueben Randle NYG 90 0.146 131.65 53.45 0.59 Jordan Matthews PHI 128 0.206 184.75 47.95 0.37 Josh Huff PHI 40 0.074 58.66 17.54 0.44 Nelson Agholor PHI 44 0.088 62.71 -5.81 -0.13 Not only was he the most efficient of the now-Eagles WRs, he gets the second-best median and high projections from the WR Sim App. He also has the highest when-targeted AYA of the…...

The RotoViz Scouting Index – Version 10

With pro days mostly finished and the draft about three weeks away, this is probably the final iteration of the RotoViz Scouting Index. Let’s take a look at the final scouting ranks. Quarterbacks Jared Goff has been the top quarterback all along. Carson Wentz has bullied his way up the rankings, while Paxton Lynch has fallen off a bit. The scouts also don’t see much difference between Dak Prescott, Christian Hackenberg, and Cardale Jones. Additional Research:  How do Jared Goff and Carson Wentz Compare to Past QB Prospects? Dak Prescott, Arbitrage Paxton Lynch Running Backs Peyton Barber – a potentially undervalued SEC back – and C.J. Prosise – this year’s David…...

Projecting the Draft: Markets and Scouts Disagree

Yesterday I ran an experiment comparing Play the Draft’s current projections against a mashup of the RotoViz Scouting Index & historical NFL draft trends. Today I’ll look at some of the players about whom the two sources disagree the most. Quarterback Name Pos PTD Draft Hx Draft Diff Dak Prescott QB 110 73.40 36.60 Christian Hackenberg QB 65 132.40 -67.40 Compared to Play the Draft (PTD), the RotoViz Scouting Index (RSI)1 really likes Dak Prescott, and really doesn’t like Christian Hackenberg.  So what does that mean? I think it depends on whether you think PTD’s crowd-sourced rankings are more likely to be…...

Projecting the NFL Draft: Markets vs. Scouts

Here at the RotoViz lab, we’re always experimenting with new ways of combining disparate bits of information into something new and meaningful. Sometimes the results are more interesting than actionable, but still worth sharing. Here’s an attempt to project the NFL draft – and identify discrepancies in the values of incoming rookies – using data from Play the Draft and the Rookie Scouting Index. Here’s what I did: Look at the past four NFL drafts (Hx Draft) and figure out the average draft position for the first wide receiver selected, second wide receiver, etc., for all the skill positions.1 Plug the…...

Three Long Shots that Might Pay Off in 2016

We’re always looking for dynasty fantasy football sleepers. Here are three players whose acquisition cost is very low, but might have decent 2016 upside. Brandon LaFell Is reportedly close to a deal with the Bengals. Newsflash: Cincinnati has a whole bunch of vacated targets. Newsflash part II: LaFell was horribly inefficient last year (-0.21 per target). But other than his rookie year of 2010, LaFell has been a solidly efficient receiver, posting a 0.36 per target efficiency number over 336 targets from 2011 – 2014.1 I wouldn’t expect him to be a league-winner in 2016. But I would expect him…...

The RotoViz Scouting Index – Version 9

Welcome to the RotoViz version of a Big Board. Here you’ll find the ninth iteration of composite NFL draft rankings from six different scouting websites. We collate the rankings, turn them into scores, and track the changes. As we work through pro days, let’s see who’s moving up and moving down. Quarterbacks Results for those ranked at five or more of the six sites we track.1 Nothing much has changed here, including Dak Prescott’s post-DUI arrest ranking. Running Backs Here’s a quick example of consistency. Rankings at each iteration of the RotoViz Scouting Index. At the other end of the rankings,…...

Undervalued Dynasty WRs You Should Buy Right Now

The flip side of my previous article. Using the same method, I’m comparing the trade value of dynasty wide receivers to their 2016 PPR projections, this time looking for cheap players to add…....

6 More Reasons Matt Forte Will be a Top 10 RB in 2016

I wrote that Matt Forte would be a top-10 running back in 2016 – and then the Jets promptly signed Bilal Powell and Khiry Robinson. Should we worry? No worries. I don’t think the presence of either affects Forte’s 2016 outlook. Let’s dispel the fears and come up with a projection for the Jets running backs. First let’s clear up the concerns about how the other backs might threaten Forte. Khiry Robinson will be 27 this season. Bilal Powell will be 28. These aren’t young backs either. Robinson has never appeared in more than 10 games in a season. Powell missed five games last year…...
