How You Draft Quarterbacks Can Determine Your Fate in Superflex Best Ball Leagues

Getting the quarterback position right in best ball leagues is one of the easiest and most effective ways to gain an advantage. Simply picking the right number of QBs in the right rounds gives you an immediate edge, before we even get to the problem of individual player selection. But what if you’re in a Superflex best ball draft? The FFPC has offered Superflex best ball drafts for a couple years. It’s a format that deserves to be way more popular than it is. If you’re going to dip your toes in, several questions arise quickly: When should I start…...

Identifying Upside Fantasy Defenses For Your Top Best Ball Targets

Choosing the right defensive roster construction is one of the key tactical ingredients of a winning roster. In 20-round drafts, there are some clear takeaways. Early defenses are a trap due to the low correlation of performance from year to year, but that’s not the biggest danger. Selecting just one, or even two defenses, is one of the easiest ways to fall behind from a roster construction standpoint. Our goal should be to select three defenses in the late rounds of every draft. But can we take this a step further and identify the right types of team defense to…...

Best Ball Workshop: Foundations of Success – The Best 2-Round Starts May Not Be What You Expect

In the first five lessons of the 2020 Best Ball Workshop, we used the Roster Construction Explorer to provide the latest intel on each of the onesie positions. The insights from the 2019 Workshop led to sky-high win rates overall and dynamic results at the onesie positions. Now in Lesson 6, we move to the marquee positions of RB and WR. In the next several lessons, we’ll take a look at the RB and WR positions from multiple angles and develop our big picture 2020 tactics. Today we start with the foundation of your roster. We’re often told you can’t…...

2020 Ranges of Outcomes: Using Historical Data to Predict and Visualize 2020 Player Performance

The RotoViz Team recently released an updated version of our Range of Outcomes App. This tool helps users to better understand a player’s realistic range of outcomes for the coming season. In this article, Dave Caban overviews the process of building the tool and interpreting its results. Austin Ekeler was awesome in 2019. He finished as an RB1 in seven weeks and was the RB6 in PPR per game. Interestingly, Ekeler recorded just 132 rushing attempts, and his fantasy success came largely through the air. He turned 108 targets into 92 receptions, 993 yards, and eight touchdowns. Melvin Gordon didn’t…...

Sophomore Sensations: Which Second Year Wide Receiver Is Poised To Have The Best 2020 Season?

Welcome to summer! Well, not officially yet, I suppose, but Memorial Day Weekend is often seen as the unofficial start of summer. With that in mind, I figured I would debut my first redraft-focused piece of the offseason. For all you dynasty players, no worries. There will still be plenty of content coming for you. Besides, focusing on one-year cycles (like redraft) is a useful exercise in its own right. Looking back at least season, several rookie wide receivers performed exceptionally well given their different situations. My goal is to determine which of the three highest-ranked rookie wideouts from last…...

Predicting Future NFL Draft Capital for Wide Receivers

First off, predicting the NFL Draft pick by pick is truly impossible. That’s not what we’re trying to do here. When it comes to fantasy football we like to see wide receivers drafted in Rounds 1-3 of the NFL Draft. Those receivers typically produce fantasy points at a much higher rate than those drafted later or not at all. “Okay, cool. Yeah. Draft capital matters. But how in the world do we actually predict future NFL Draft capital? And why does that matter?” Great questions! Last year I introduced a new production metric called the Adjusted Production Index. It’s a…...

Can These 2 Third-Year WRs Break Into the Elite Tier?

Year 2 has always been a big year for wide receivers, and last year’s sophomore class certainly did not disappoint: four different players eclipsed the breakout threshold of 200 PPR points, the most since 2015, rewarding owners who took advantage of perhaps the biggest edge in fantasy football. Success doesn’t come cheap though, as all the previous breakouts from the 2018 draft class are being picked in the top six rounds. Two of those WRs come with late fourth-round ADPs: Courtland Sutton and Calvin Ridley. Sutton, one of last year’s top values, broke out in a big way in 2019,…...

Big Surprises in the Live and Loaded Black Crown Rookie Draft: Breaking Down All 4 Rounds of the Superflex Spectacle

Last night, Curtis Patrick held the inaugural rookie draft for the Black Crown Dynasty League live on zoom. It was a raucous and festive occasion with many of my favorite writers in the dynasty community – T.J. Calkins, Ryan McDowell, Patrick Kerrane, J.J. Zachariason, Rich Hribar, Matthew Freedman, Scott Barrett, Tyler Buecher, Danny Kelly, and John Daigle. This is a Superflex, TE Premium league with multiple flexes to fill out the 11 starting spots. The recent startup included a fun quirk where drafters were able to select a rookie pick instead of a veteran. In a risky, high-upside approach meant…...
