The 10 Most Likely Deep Receivers in the 2014 Draft Class

mikeevans

The formula for projecting a receiver’s yards per reception number in the first three years of their career is both simple and intuitive. There are only two inputs and they’re both obvious. Using just a player’s college yards per reception (YPR), and their 40 time, you can get a really rough fit for their first three years YPR in the NFL.

Here are the 10 receivers that I have projected to have the highest Yards/Reception in their first three years:

*40 Yard dash times are from NFL Draft Scout.

NAME TM Final College Year Final College YPR FORTY PREDYPR
MARTAVIS BRYANT Clemson 2013 19.71 4.42 14.62
ODELL BECKHAM Louisiana State 2013 19.60 4.43 14.55
MIKE EVANS Texas A&M 2013 20.13 4.53 14.15
DRI ARCHER Kent State 2013 13.08 4.26 14.04
LDAMIAN WASHINGTON Missouri 2013 17.86 4.46 14.03
PAUL RICHARDSON Colorado 2013 16.28 4.40 14.00
DONTE MONCRIEF Mississippi 2013 15.90 4.40 13.92
ALBERT WILSON Georgia State 2013 16.58 4.43 13.91
JOSH HUFF Oregon 2013 18.39 4.51 13.88
BRANDIN COOKS Oregon State 2013 13.52 4.33 13.78

It’s probably worth noting that Jeff Janis would have placed 11 on this list, in case any Janis fans are interested.

Some thoughts:

  • Most YPR numbers reside in the 12-15 range, so that’s why even though these are the most likely deep receivers, the projected YPR aren’t really high. That’s just how projection goes.
  • This list might be of zero utility. First, yards per reception is more of an explanatory stat rather than a predictive one. Many WR1 types will actually average in the 13 yards/reception range as their mix of deep shots and short passes to pick up first downs end up cancelling each other out. Second, out of the models that I’m working on related to WRs, this one had the poorest fit. It only has an RSQ of .14, although both variables had a p-value less than 0.01. But I actually don’t think the list is of zero utility. I think it’s worthwhile to think about the kind of players that each prospect might be.
  • Dri Archer and Brandin Cooks, despite their track speed, were not high yards/reception players in college. That may end up carrying over into the NFL. If it does it’s probably problematic for both. Speed receivers that don’t average a high YPR number are likely catching a bunch of screen passes, which means that they’re being asked to do a lot after the catch. Which means they’re being tackled a lot for each yard they gain. For smallish receivers I would rather see them get the ball in instances where there might be only one or two potential tacklers.  Ideally some not insignificant number of targets will result in no tackle at all because the pass is either incomplete/off the mark, or it goes for a touchdown. NFL teams spend lots of resources to acquire players, they have high failure rates when doing that, and then when they do find those players they have no problem throwing screen passes to small receivers and then waiting for them to get gang tackled. It’s a windfall for the training room’s ongoing budget.
  • Having said that, if Archer could have RB availability he might be really valuable. But as a WR he looks like Tavon Austin without the “coaches/GMs trying to prove they weren’t wrong” baggage.
  • L’Damian Washington is kind of an interesting name. He looks like a skinnier version of AJ Green even if that doesn’t seem possible.
  • Jake Myers has written about Albert Wilson here.
  • Jake Myers has written about Moncrief here.

In the event that you want to see the rest of the projections (including past seasons), here they are:
