The Matt Forte Award for All Around Fantasy Scoring Potential Goes to..

MattForte

If you missed the first three parts of this series you can catch up here, here and here.

As Shawn Siegele has pointed out, there are several draftable running back profiles and then maybe occupying the sweet spot among those profiles is the player that can do a number of things in an NFL backfield. The same RB that teams use on 1st down, 2nd down and near the goal line isn’t always the same player that leads a backfield in catches. But some prospects that come along are really able to project favorably in multiple aspects of the game. The ideal RB would by large, have a low 3 Cone time, a low 40 time, and lots of production across the various categories in college. Matt Forte fits this bill pretty well even though he hasn’t been a TD machine in the NFL. But he’s a big player that scored well in the drills I mention above and also had a ton of production coming out of college. Unsurprisingly LaDainian Tomlinson scores really well on this model as well, although that’s actually in spite of the fact that it wouldn’t have been automatic to project him for a lot of receptions when he was a prospect. He hadn’t been used that way at TCU.

The award for this year’s class goes to Bishop Sankey, who is strong in a number of categories. It’s actually the case that Sankey ties with Tyler Gaffney, although I think that’s temporary. I haven’t yet decided how to treat age in this exercise and I suspect once I add it in, Gaffney will drop off. For what it’s worth, age tests out as being predictive although I have to figure out if there’s some sample bias in my test that’s making that the case. Until I figure that out, I’ll just leave age out even if temporarily.

Not far behind Sankey is Andre Williams, followed by Charles Sims. Also, even though Jerick McKinnon didn’t play against BCS level competition and it might be cheating to include his numbers, I did it anyway. He comes in as being just better than average as an all around prospect. The primary place where he lags is in the straight production numbers.

It’s also worth noting that if a player had no entry for a variable needed for a part of the projection, I marked them a zero for that component. For instance, Trent Richardson didn’t have a 3 Cone drill, so his score doesn’t reflect an addition for receptions per game. There’s probably a different way to handle missing data but hopefully this will get the players to do all of the drills at the Combine… as I’m sure they fear being left out of my fantasy projection models.

You can page through the results or search using the table. All of the RBs that I have data for are in there.

EDIT: The table below has now been updated to reflect an attempt I made to handle missing three cone times. The three cone was being used in the projection for receptions/game. For players that have missing three cone times I simply make that component of the projection using only their college receptions/game.
