Kevin Szafraniec debates whether the hype has gone too far for a young wide receiver who turned plenty of heads down the stretch during his rookie season.
There was always a considerable amount of buzz surrounding Chris Godwin from the time he was drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft until he broke out as the overall WR2 in his third season. In the meantime, Godwin showed solid growth while playing behind Mike Evans, Adam Humphries, and DeSean Jackson during his first two years in the league.

But once the path was cleared for Godwin to take off in Year 3, he wasted little time proving his truthers right. In 2019, Godwin averaged 19.7 PPR/GM, putting up the second-most PPR points and fantasy points over expectation (FPOE) among wide receivers.

One of 2025’s rookie WRs may be getting a head start on Godwin, as it appears that a path is being laid for him to break out in his second NFL season. And the fantasy community has been quick to take notice. With the hype intensifying by the second, have we gotten ahead of ourselves by anointing his electric young wideout as a surefire fantasy star?
