Target Market Shares, Game Flow and Flat Circles

pierregarcon

I’m a glutton for pop culture. So like the majority of America I was hooked on the latest HBO gem True Detective. In that series, Rust Cohle (played by Mathew McConaughey) basically puts on the clinic of all clinics in the art of rhetoric. The most popular line being “Time is a flat circle. Everything we’ve ever done or will do. We’re gonna do over and over and over again.”

I’m not just out to plug HBO, however, so let’s bring this into the fake football realm. With data driven analysis, there’s always a fine line in taking something that is descriptive and applying it as a predictive measure. I’m setting out to do both here, taking aim at the cruelest of all fantasy mistresses, game flow.

It’s no secret that play calling in the league is directly tied into the scoreboard. Last December, Papa Rotoviz went under the hood of the game flow machine as well. Balanced and unbalanced teams aren’t necessarily as they appear on the final stat sheets. Good teams always accumulate better rushing totals because teams run more when they have the lead. If you filter rushing attempts in the fourth quarter this past season, the top 11 teams made the playoffs (San Diego was 18th). Here’s a league wide breakdown of pass versus run splits by game situation in 2013.

I had to make an executive decision on quarterback rushing attempts:  to treat them as runs or pass plays. Since I am going back into the late 90’s in my research, there’s not enough data to differentiate designed QB runs and scrambles throughout the years, so we are looking at play result only. Pass percentage is naturally a tick lower because of this, but it’s not a dramatic effect and it’s the only way to keep the research processs sane.

Situation Pass % Run %
Ahead 4Q 34.6 65.4
Ahead 10+ 43.6 56.4
Ahead 49.4 50.6
Tied 56 44
Behind 65.9 34.1
Behind 10+ 71.3 28.7
Behind 4Q 77.6 22.4

No surprises there, but that visual is needed as we look at the influence that game situations had on the receiver position last season. Below is a table with every single wide receiver to have a target last year and the percentage of his teams’ targets he had during each game situation: Target Market Shares, if you will. I also included the total team passing attempts so you could see the sample size.

All of the columns have relevance, but the final two columns are the most important for me personally. Neutral Target Percentage is the percentage of team targets the receiver had when the score was tied or his team was ahead. This is important because when the offense is on script, those are the players the offense is using in generating and maintaining that flow. It also comes with lower odds of passing play calling, so owning a lot of equity in a small market is what we’re after.

The Negative Change column is the benefit (or lack thereof) that a receiver garnered because his team was forced to call pass plays dictated by score in the game.

Application

While this is descriptive info, it can be applied creatively in the amazing WR Sim Score App for projections. Since the app has a feature that allows you to add and remove games, the data below is actionable in the use of those filters. I can make hundreds of notes from this in both directions, but let me highlight a few examples.

  • No player was affected more by game flow than Dwayne Bowe. Kansas City started 9-0, nursing leads created by their defense. In the back half of the season, the Chiefs went 2-5 and Bowe generated much more work in the passing game (this affected Jamaal Charles as well, but another time). As a whole, the App paints Bowe as a WR4, but looking at weeks 10 and on, his high end score puts him in low WR2 territory. I think we can anticipate the Chiefs won’t start 9-0 again, making Bowe a strong candidate to outperform his draft spot.
  • 57 percent of Cecil Shorts’ targets came while trailing by double digits and 30 percent when Jacksonville was trailing by double digits in the fourth quarter. Removing the three games where he benefited most by junk game script (SEA, OAK, SD) turns his high end WR2 projection into a low WR3 one.
  • Ironically, the player that lost the most shares playing from behind was Antonio Brown. He lead the league in neutral target shares, but lost over ten percent of his shares when Pittsburgh was throwing it around at a high volume. Of course, this inflated Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery. Brown is a candidate for touchdown and reception regression, but this keeps some light at the end of the tunnel.
  • In the neutral column, you’ll notice a pretty large disparity between Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. Pretty poignant to remember that the passing offense still runs through Marshall when the game script is favorable and he still has children named after Jay Cutler. Marshall is currently being taken right after Jeffery in 2014 redrafts, which looks like an early mistake.
  • Another player that was more effective and used more while his team was ahead was Aaron Dobson.  That makes sense since he was a rookie and played a home run role in the offense. It’s hard to take shots downfield when the defense is already playing the pass. In week nine, he had three catches for 108 yards and two scores in the fourth quarter while the Patriots were already winning. Taking away that game in the App tempers his projected magic a bit, but he’s still a year two buy if his price holds.

Your Turn

I could do this all day long, but have fun with the table yourself. You can search any columns you want to narrow down the field or enter a team in the search. If there’s clamoring for more info, I’ll do a follow up with running back and tight end targets. The one word of caution I will add is the games and points scored did actually happen. While we’re generating a hypothesis in removing them that has merit, it’s important not to completely disregard information. Consider this a heat check on your assumptions for a receiver.

The above table is strictly market shares, so injured players like Julio Jones and Michael Crabtree are dinged in that regard. This second table below is the individual split of targets by game situation.  Let me give a few quick notes.

  • Washington was terrible and Pierre Garcon really benefitted from the lack of other options. If you check out his YOY Plot, his high end comps are filled with guys who were massive target whores in their offenses. This probably could fill an entire post, but if Washington improves defensively, and Jordan Reed and Desean Jackson eat into his neutral target share, things get sketchy if his inflated price holds.
  • Garcon had one fewer target down double digit points than the Cowboys had as a team combined. The Dallas defense was bad, but their offense still kept games close. It is baffling that Dallas struggled to get Dez Bryant the football in accommodating game situations, as only 31 percent of his targets were when trailing. Scott Linehan has a long history of working with elite wide receiver talent, so gobble up any discounted Bryant shares you can.
  • Considering the perception of the Browns a year ago, Josh Gordon wasn’t really inflated by a smattering of targets while trailing as a whole, but he was helped out by big deficits.  He also did all of his touchdown damage except for one while behind on the scoreboard. The neutral volume still exists for him, but he will need to improve in the red zone to stay in the top tier in 2014.

Same as above, I could go on and on, but explore this for yourself. Time may in fact be a flat circle, but finding the data that is more probable to repeat itself  is what we’re always chasing.
