Offensive line continuity can often prove a hidden element in offenses veering from projections once the regular season gets underway. The 49ers offense clicked into gear under Kyle Shanahan while carrying max offensive-line continuity into their NFC title run, while the Rams’ setback under Sean McVay coincided with turning over multiple starters for the first time in years.

Over the years I’ve written about the increasing emphasis on offensive line continuity, how critical it is to maintain it, the challenge of finding stability.

How do I define an incumbent? He needs to be the projected Week 1 starter who took the majority of snaps for the same team in the season prior, or entered as the team’s Week 1 starter in the previous season. This has produced significant correlation in offensive metrics detailed in those studies linked above, including with individual rushers, Pro Football Focus run-blocking grade, and total offense.

You can win without offensive line continuity, but many of our league-winning performances occur as a result. The OL Continuity Project will help you make those tough decisions during your final drafts and help you profit in trades over this last week of the preseason.

Thomas Emerick launches his 12th offseason offensive line continuity series. James Cook is a special talent and, at the same time, reaped the benefit from years of continuity on the Bills’ starting offensive line, culminating in Buffalo’s best year up front since the ’90s. And this decade reminds us that getting to the Super Bowl is no small feat. Like that quartet of AFC champion squads,…...

James Cook’s Rushing Title Runs Through the League’s Only Stable Blocking Unit: Offensive Lines and Their Fantasy Impacts, Week 17

Last week featured almost entirely bad news on the injury front, particularly in the offensive trenches. The Bills were the only team in the league during Week 16 with five OL starters in the lineup who’ve played together since last season and qualify as incumbents. This continuity has catalyzed James Cook’s rushing title campaign, along with him just being an awesome running back. Disruptions to…...

Maybe Quinshon Judkins Isn’t the Real Problem in Cleveland: Offensive Lines and Their Fantasy Impacts, Week 16

Several offensive lines got blitzed with injuries last week and managed varying levels of success with plugging the leak. Meanwhile, Buffalo had the welcome return of RT Spencer Brown to max out their continuity with five year-over-year starters rolling in late December. This catalyzed the rally down 21 in snowy Foxborough: only two combined pressures came from the offensive tackle position, bookended by Brown (one hurry,…...
