On the first day of free agency, the Jets signed Justin Fields to be their starting quarterback in 2025. The deal is for two years at an average annual salary of $20.0M, which ranks as the 21st highest of any QB in the league, according to Spotrac.
After experiencing some highs and lows to start his career, Fields’ new deal represents both the potential and volatility he brings to the Jets’ offense. The annual number could be considered a huge value if Fields can deliver on the dual-threat potential he offered as the 11th overall pick in the 2021 draft. The length and value of the contract also make it easy for the team to cut their losses if Fields proves to be more of a liability than an asset to the offense.
Fields does not represent the only dynamic playmaker on the Jets roster who has underperformed expectations in recent years. Since being drafted in 2022, Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall have experienced periods of feast and famine. Respective to their first-round fantasy ADPs and enticing ceilings entering 2024, last season was a disappointment for both Wilson and Hall. While there are positives to point to for each, Wilson’s continued lack of efficiency and Hall’s lack of overall production left fantasy managers unfulfilled in 2024.
