Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 10

Even as we prepare for college football’s “game of the year,” it’s a great time to look for devy prospects at all levels. The Group of Five received some of the spotlight in Memphis’s win over SMU. Quarterback Stephen Calvert, QB Liberty Playing against UMass will make any competent FBS offense look like a juggernaut.1 Still, Calvert has been a highly productive QB since he and Liberty joined the FBS last season. For the year, Calvert has an AY/A of 10.3 and a 61.7 percent completion percentage. He’s passed for 5,706 yards since joining the FBS, including 2,638 in nine…...

Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 9

Another college football weekend, another major upset. Once again, this week’s slate of games proved that it’s very difficult to go undefeated for an entire season. In the Group of Five, an underwhelming slate of games delivered a few exciting matchups. Quarterback Mason Fine, QB North Texas In the preview of North Texas’s game against Charlotte, I stated that Charlotte WR Victor Tucker was the devy prospect to watch. And while that’s still mostly true, Mason Fine is producing enough to earn draft considerations. Fine had the seventh-most passing yards for the week with his 394-yard, five-TD performance. For the…...

Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 8

The storylines coming out of Week 8 were upset and one noteworthy injury. And the upsets weren’t limited to the Power 5. BYU knocked off the undefeated Boise State team. The American Athletic Conference was the highlight for prospects, this week, as some of the most dynamic offenses were on display. Quarterback Shane Buechele, QB SMU In what was a minor surprise, SMU blew out Temple 45-21. The win-loss outcome wasn’t particularly surprising as SMU was a favorite and is undefeated, but the lopsided win was unexpected. One of the biggest reasons for the blowout was SMU’s ever-improving passing attack…...

Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 7

Week 7 gave us mixed results as fans. Some games were duds, while others produced non-stop action for four quarters. Luckily, I put out last week’s article later than usual because Appalachian State at Louisiana-Lafayette would have been a featured matchup, and the 17-7 game was even less exciting than the scoreline would suggest. The two featured matchups were competitive, high-scoring games that had some standout production. But the best games of the week took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Hattiesburg, Mississippi, which is why our highlight players of the week mostly come from these two games. Quarterback Patrick…...

Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 6

If you’re a fan of non-Power Five programs, you were treated to a showcase matchup between two of the more recognizable programs. And in front of a very well-coordinated Cincinnati crowd, the home team picked up a big win against the uncrowned 2017 National Champion, UCF Knights. It wasn’t a great showing for this series’ favorite QB, Dillon Gabriel, but it helped give exposure to two smaller programs on a big stage. Running Back Michael Warren III, RB Cincinnati I had to feature one player from the showcase game of the weekend and since I got my obligatory Gabriel mention done…...

Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 5

Week 5 was one of my favorites weeks so far this season. It featured unexpectedly close games between conference foes, fan-friendly shootouts, and only a few blowouts. Both of last week’s games of the week turned into high scoring affairs and showcased the potential that can come from the group of five. Quarterback Jack Abraham, QB, Southern Mississippi Jack Abraham took an extended path to school, but the junior QB seems to have found his place at Southern Mississippi. Abraham was a three-star prospect who originally signed with Louisiana Tech before transferring to junior college after one year. In his…...

Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 4

Oklahoma State-Texas and Notre Dame-Georgia headlined an exciting college football slate in Week 4. But, there were also some impressive outings for smaller school athletes. The following three players have flashed potential this season and had strong performances again last week. Quarterback Mitchell Guadagni, QB, Toledo Mitchell Guadagni is far from a proven commodity. He’s only accounted for 1568 passing yards since joining Toledo’s team in 2015. In fairness to Guadagni, his 2018 season was cut short by injury, and he only played in seven games. Encouragingly, he’s currently posting an impressive 11.1 adjusted yards per attempt (AY/A) in 2019,…...

Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 3

Week 3 wasn’t exactly filled with high profile matchups between ranked teams. For viewing purposes, that’s somewhat disappointing, but for fantasy evaluations, it provides opportunities for high-level production. To mix it up a little bit, my highlight players are all going to come from one team this week. Not only did Central Florida secure the victory for my lock pick from the RotoViz College Football podcast, but they dominated a traditional powerhouse team. And here are the players that caught my eye. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel, QB, UCF There was some question about who would be starting at QB. Brandon Wimbush started…...

Group of Five Devy Rundown: Week 2

Whether it was high-scoring affairs between two lower-level teams or upset bids against national programs, the group of five provided entertainment for college football fans. And some of the top skill players provided high-level production for devy players to analyze. The following Group of Five players made the most of their Week 2 matchups. Quarterback Tyler Johnston III, UAB Through two games Johnston ranks 13th in the nation in adjusted yards per attempt (AYA) with 11.3 and has accumulated 433 passing yards. He’s also tacked on 88 rushing yards and a touchdown with an average of 4.4 yards per attempt…....

Group of Five Devy Rundown

College football is back and for Devy League players that means that a brand new crop of prospects will be on display. My RotoViz CFB podcast partner, Jordan Hoover, has been doing a good job identifying Power 5 players that should be on the radar, but I’m going to look a little bit deeper to find some values. The following Group of Five players made the most of their week one matchups. Quarterback Jordan Love, Utah State Love put up 416 passing yards and three touchdowns while completing 68.8% of his passes against Wake Forest. However, his opening week performance…...
