Originally published August 5, Corbin Young reminds us of inexpensive second-year breakout candidates, including one who blew up in the first preseason game.

In a recent article, I looked at three second-year breakout wide receivers. We used Blair Andrews’ previous research to help identify players. That article included three second-year receivers ready to breakout in 2021. But none of those three players are particularly cheap, with two of them going inside the first 100 picks. Let’s look at a few receivers who have ADPs outside the top-150 picks.

As a reminder, Blair’s research found that players earn the largest increase in target share and raw target totals from their first to second seasons in the NFL — in fact for most players it’s the only year in which they should expect an increase. Blair also narrowed down two thresholds that help us locate these breakout players: scoring at least 100 fantasy points in their rookie seasons and playing their rookie seasons at 21 years of age. Below, we see the win rates for wide receivers who scored 100 points, based on their age in the previous season.

While none of the players below scored 100 points, two of the three did meet the age threshold, and all likely would have scored 100 points if they had played a full season.

So You’re Telling Me There’s a Chance: 7 UDFA Running Backs to Watch in 2024

The running back position continues to be undervalued in the real-life draft. It’s even more challenging for undrafted RBs to make an impact in their rookie seasons. Since 2014, we’ve only had 14 RBs (6.5%) drafted in the first round out of 217 players. For context, 147 of the 217 running backs went on Day 3 since 2014. Over two-thirds of RBs (67.7%) went in…...

There’s No Place Like Home: The 2024 Outlooks for 3 Veteran Receivers Who Decided Not to Move

With free agency open, the floodgates broke for several players, including three veteran receivers staying home with their respective teams. Sometimes a veteran receiver might go overlooked as the hype rises for the rookies and sophomores. Unlike running backs, we sometimes have more consistency at the receiver position, especially when a young player establishes themselves and earns targets. Let’s look at the early fantasy impact…...

Devin Singletary Flashed Immense Upside in His Rookie Year, And This 2023 Rookie Running Back Is Following In His Footsteps

The Bills drafted Devin Singletary in 2019 to pair with veteran Frank Gore in his age-36 season. Singletary bested Gore in snap share (68% vs. 35%) and rush share (42% vs. 36%). He also edged Gore in rushing yards (775 vs. 599). Singletary saw a healthy rush share and a 12% target share (No. 17), and averaged 12.5 PPR/G (No. 27) as a rookie. The…...
