Joe Flacco Injury Update

Injury Update: Cam Newton Shoulder Surgery

Cam Newton, Carolina’s star quarter back, injured his throwing shoulder’s rotator cuff on December 11, 2016, Week 14 against the then-San Diego Chargers. He played the last two games of the season with this injury, and performed relatively poorly…....

Injury Update: Eddie Lacy’s Ankle

Eddy Lacy, the Seahawks new running back, injured his right ankle during Week 6 of last season, and was placed on injured reserve. In October he underwent surgical repair of his fracture and deltoid ligament injury, requiring “wires, 2 screws and a plate.” He was given a 4-6 month timetable, and expects to be able to perform well during OTAs. Medial (Inside) Ankle Ligaments His surgeon, Dr. Anderson, wrote a paper on this very injury, in which he reported that, following surgical repair, 86 percent of NFL players were able to return to play after roughly six months.1 Often, the reason…...

Injury Update: Le’Veon Bell’s Sports Hernia Surgery

Le’veon Bell suffered a sports hernia injury during the 2016 playoffs. He tried to treat his injury non-operatively, but finally realized that he needed to have it repaired; surgery was performed on March 13, 2017. He was given a six week timetable for recovery. I think that could be a little optimistic for full recovery for someone playing the highly demanding NFL running back position but since there’s a lot of time before the start of the 2017 season, that’s not a big issue. Following his sports hernia repair, there’s a good chance it’ll take two months or more for Bell to…...

Injury Update – Terrell Suggs and Ben Roethlisberger

Prominent AFC North players Terrell Suggs and Ben Roethlisberger suffered injuries in Week 6. Terrell Suggs, one of Baltimore’s top defenders, was reported to have torn his left (distal) biceps tendon from his elbow this week. While normally a season-ending injury, Suggs played through the same issue to his right arm in 2012, delaying his surgical repair for that injury. The biceps is a major muscle that provides significant speed and power to elbow flexion, and much of the strength used to supinate the forearm (i.e. turn the palm up). Distal Biceps Tendon tears usually occur with a painful pop,…...
