Giana Pacinell provides QB streaming options, 2-QB plays, and overall QB rankings and for Week 3 of the 2019 fantasy football season.
Week 2 was a very costly fantasy week — Ben Roethlisberger suffered a right elbow injury which required surgery, marking the end to his season and Drew Brees will be sidelined for at least six weeks with surgery on his right thumb. On Monday night, Trevor Siemien, in for the ill Sam Darnold, also suffered a gruesome ankle injury. These injuries not only affect the owners of these players, but the running backs and wide receivers on those teams (who were taken early in drafts) will also see a decline in production due to these injuries.
Siemien, Brees and Roethlisberger join Andrew Luck (retired), Darnold (illness) and Nick Foles (injured) on the list of starting quarterbacks that we have already lost this season. That’s 15% of the league — and Week 3 hasn’t even begun.
On a positive note, there was plenty to get excited about if you don’t have any of those quarterbacks and are fortunate enough to have Dak Prescott or Lamar Jackson on your team.
- Prescott’s three-touchdown outing this past Sunday brought his season total to 674 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception in his first two weeks. He is completing 82 percent of his throws and now has the most games with 90 total QBR since 2016 (10) – second to Tom Brady, who has seven.
- On Sunday, Jackson became the first player in NFL history with at least 250 passing yards and 120 rushing yards in a single game. Jackson will face off against Patrick Mahomes in a Week 3 matchup we never knew we needed.
- Speaking of, Mahomes had over 300 yards and four touchdowns in the first half of his Week 2 matchup. You read that correctly.
The excitement for me, ends there as my Week 2 picks weren’t very helpful. Shame on me for thinking Derek Carr could produce consistent fantasy numbers on a weekly basis. Roethlisberger unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury, and Marcus Mariota barely produced reasonable streamer numbers.
We don’t have bye weeks yet, but we do have injuries and underachieving quarterbacks (Cam Newton, Kirk Cousins). And fortunately, we also have quarterback rankings and streaming options to help weave your way through the new faces (looking at you all – Teddy Bridgewater, Mason Rudolph, Luke Falk, Gardner Minshew, Daniel Jones).

2-QB Pick of the Week – Josh Allen vs Cincinnatti
Ownership (Yahoo): 60%
Ownership (ESPN): 30%
I held back on pushing Josh Allen last week for no reason other than I wanted to avoid a repeat pick. And for that, I failed you. It won’t happen again, unless Allen becomes too widely owned that is. Though he still has some growing pains, Allen has put up 250-plus passing yards and a score in each of his first two games this season.
Should he continue to run with regularity, Allen’s strength-of-schedule makes him a viable option as a season-long QB2. At the very least, he should deliver in Week 3 against a Bengals defense who has given up 62 points combined in the last two weeks. I expect his ownership numbers will skyrocket this week, so if he’s still available in your league, get him before it’s too late.
Favorite Streamer – Jacoby Brissett vs Atlanta
Ownership (Yahoo): 17%
Ownership (ESPN): 12%
He’s not Andrew Luck, but Jacoby Brissett is making a name for himself as the new leader of the Colts offense. Coming off the first three-touchdown performance of his career, Brissett will return home for the first time this season with an ideal matchup against the Falcons. Though the Falcons defense certainly pose a threat to Brissett — they forced three turnovers last week against the Eagles — they were in the bottom 10 for pass defense last season and Brissett managed to hold his own against a solid Titans defense.
While you can’t trust Brissett like you would Luck, he may have found some luck with his upcoming schedule. If you are in need of a quarterback you can stream for a few more weeks, Brissett will take on Oakland in Week 4 and Kansas City in Week 5 before a Week 6 bye.
Bounceback Candidate – Jimmy Garoppolo vs Pittsburgh
Ownership (Yahoo): 65%
Ownership (ESPN): 24.3%
Since Kyle Shanahan joined the 49ers, we’ve been waiting for the offense to click. We finally saw signs of light on Sunday in Cincinnati, with Jimmy Garoppolo tossing for 297 yards, three touchdown passes and an interception. Garoppolo seemed to re-establish his connection with Marquise Goodwin and leverage rookie Deebo Samuel in the red zone.
Garoppolo and company may be on their way to fantasy relevance at home against a Steelers defense that’s allowed 300-plus passing yards and three touchdowns to each of the quarterbacks they’ve faced this season. If Garoppolo is still available in your league, he is your best option as a season-long QB2 with QB1 potential. It is important to note that the 49ers will have an early bye next week, however.
