High Staked: Bad Beats

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season.

I haven’t used this space that often this season to give detailed updates on the FFPC high-stakes teams I help run, but I’m doing so this week because I believe there’s a common unifier among those who play fantasy football: the bad beat.

As opposed to the dominant teams we’ve had the past few years, our squads this year are struggling to stay afloat. The conclusion of Week 8 would mean that more than two-thirds of the FFPC regular season would be in the books. It was a pivotal week. We have one Main Event team and a Super Bracket team that are in the thick of the playoff hunt, and wins in either or both leagues would have greatly strengthened our odds of advancing.

In our Main Event league, we were 5-2 and a win would give us the inside track for at least the fourth and final playoff spot for the final three games. We had great weeks from Tevin Coleman and Michael Thomas but faced Deshaun Watson and Latavius Murray. We needed JuJu Smith-Schuster to catch five passes for 109 yards and a TD on Monday to eke out a win. Here’s what we got:

Yes, we fell six yards short. What was even more painful was our defense, Houston, was one of only two teams to post zero points that week. We literally could have picked up any other defense but Cincinnati and won our match. We also would have beaten any other team but the one we played, and the next closest team scored 20 fewer points than we did. It was a horrible loss.

In our Super Bracket league, a contest in which we’ve never advanced past the regular season, we had a poor 3-4 record but could qualify with points. Still, a win would give us more qualifying scenarios. We had Cooper Kupp; he had Murray. Going into Monday night, our opponent had Vance McDonald, and he needed him to have three catches for 15 yards to beat us.

Yes, McDonald got five more yards than we needed him to get, and he did so on a meaningless 1-yard catch late in the fourth quarter with a Steelers win well in hand. And, again, we started the Houston defense. I murdered a few couch pillows with my fists on Monday night.

Week 9 Waivers

I always get a chuckle when teams rush to pick up a guy one week, then the guy does nothing and he’s one of the leading drops the next week. In this case, it’s DaeSean Hamilton, who was added after he was elevated to presumed starter status in the wake of the Emmanuel Sanders trade and literally did nothing,1 then was dropped by more than half of the number of teams who grabbed him the week before.

This week, the biggest adds in the Main Event were Josh Reynolds, who could see more action if Brandin Cooks sits with a concussion; Chris Conley, who also could see an uptick in snaps with Marqise Lee on injured reserve; and the Cleveland defense, which faces Denver quarterback Brandon Allen in his first-ever start.
