Week 8 QB Rankings, Streaming Options, and 2-QB Plays

Giana Pacinelli provides QB streaming options, 2-QB plays, and overall QB rankings for Week 8 of the 2019 fantasy football season.

Week 7 reminded all of us that it’s Aaron Rodgers’ world and we’re just living in it. Rodgers became the fastest quarterback to 350 touchdown passes in NFL history this past week, putting up 427 yards and six touchdowns (one rushing). And that’s despite his third-straight game missing Davante Adams. In other record-breaking quarterback news:

  • Matthew Stafford became the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 40,000 career passing yards.
  • Lamar Jackson now has the most rushing yards (576) of any quarterback in the first seven games of any NFL season.
  • Gardner Minshew became the first player in NFL history to throw 10-plus touchdowns with two or fewer interceptions through seven career games.

While some broke records, others broke down. Patrick Mahomes dislocated his kneecap and is week to week. Matt Ryan sprained his ankle and will be a game-time decision for Week 8. Matt Moore and Matt Schaub will take their places, respectively.

For anyone who took my advice on starting Sam Darnold against the Patriots, here’s hoping his weak strength of schedule moving forward will make up for the total fantasy implosion of Week 7.

I did fare much better with my picks of Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew, the latter of whom bounced back and made history (see above). Meanwhile, Brissett put up 326 yards and four touchdowns Sunday and leads the league in touchdown passes per game seven weeks into the season. He is now too good to be a waiver wire pickup in this column. If he happens to still be available, you may want to rethink your league.

Onto Week 8, Ravens and Cowboys are on bye and Drew Brees is (maybe) back.

2-QB Pick of the Week – Kirk Cousins vs. Washington

Ownership (Yahoo): 84%
Ownership (ESPN): 39%
GLSP: 16.3

I understand that Kirk Cousins started the season slow, but I was still surprised to find how in how few leagues he is rostered (though he is up 21% in Yahoo this week). For the past three weeks, Cousins has put up QB1 numbers with 976 yards, 10 touchdowns and a lone interception. He has had a four-touchdown passing performance in each of the last two weeks.

Whether we can attribute this shift stemming from his star receivers Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs expressing their frustrations after their Week 4 loss or not, fantasy owners can reap the benefits of Cousins being largely undervalued and unowned in a revenge-game Thursday Night Football matchup against Washington.

Though Washington’s defense has looked good the past two weeks, we can attribute much of their success to poor weather conditions (vs SF) and favorable matchups (at MIA). Prior to those two weeks, Washington’s defense was allowing 23 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks. Though Cousins will likely be without Thielen, he still has the momentum and the weapons to have a productive day against his former team.

Favorite Streamer – Matthew Stafford vs. NY Giants

Ownership (Yahoo): 77%
Ownership (ESPN): 48.9%
GLSP: 17.9

Matthew Stafford had himself a day this past Sunday with 364 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in a 42-30 loss to the Vikings. Though his fantasy production has been inconsistent, Stafford is averaging 19.7 points per game — tied as the QB8 with Aaron Rodgers in the category. He has thrown for a minimum of 200 yards in every game this season and has had four multi-touchdown days.

Though Stafford is notorious for being unreliable as it relates to fantasy, his matchup against the Giants is not. The Giants defense may have held Kyler Murray in check last week but are still averaging 17.97 points per game to opposing quarterbacks over the last five weeks, per RotoViz Matchup Analysis tool within the NFL Stat Explorer.

If you have Matt Ryan or Patrick Mahomes, Stafford is a favorable placeholder this Sunday and in Week 9 (at OAK). After that, he will face a sea of scary defenses for a majority of the remaining season.

Bounceback Candidate – Mason Rudolph vs. Miami

Ownership (Yahoo): 11%
Ownership (ESPN): 6.4%
GLSP: 15.7

Mason Rudolph will look to bounceback on Monday night as I seek a bounceback of my own by choosing another MNF quarterback. Rudolph, who suffered a concussion in Week 5, has had two weeks to recover (bye week) and should be able to do just that against a Miami defense who has given up the second-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season.

Every quarterback who has played the Dolphins this season has put up a top-12 QB performance, except for Case Keenum who was still able to toss for two scores without turning the ball over. While Rudolph has put up relatively modest performances thus far — averaging 15.8 fantasy points per game — he has scored two touchdowns in every game except Week 5 when he suffered his concussion. His average fantasy points should be sufficient for those in desperate need of a streamer, and this week’s matchup makes the upside even better. What’s more, Rudolph’s schedule for the remainder of the season continues to be favorable for those seeking a long-term option.
