4 Running Back Prospects Whose College Production Points to Outsized Returns, and 4 Potential Red Flags: 2025 Backfield Dominator Ratings

Collegiate production is still among the most undervalued measurements for running back prospects. In large part this is because we lack many good ways to measure it. Both rushing and receiving numbers depend on scheme, personnel, offensive and defensive strength, and a host of other factors. This can make many of the raw counting stats misleading.

The solution is to control for these factors as much as we can. One of our favorite ways to control for some of these elements is the backfield dominator rating (BDR). In short, BDR compares an RB’s production against the other RBs on his team. For a more detailed look at the methodology, read the introduction to some of the past entries. Some of the standouts from previous years who’ve had a surprising NFL impact include Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, Phillip Lindsay, De’Von Achane, Jaleel McLaughlin, and Ray Davis.

The table below lists the BDR numbers for every RB prospect invited to the combine. Below that I’ll include some notes on how best to interpret and take advantage of these numbers. Note that you can find BDR and many other metrics in the Box Score Scout.

You can also find BDR and many advanced metrics from Sports Info Solutions included in the 2025 RotoViz Rookie Guide. Game-Level Similarity Projections and Weekly Rankings: The Wrong Read, Week 7

One of my favorite ways to prep for the upcoming week of football games is to use the GLSP tool. Those projections use sophisticated modeling techniques to find a range of outcomes, and as such they do a better job of capturing the inherent uncertainty of weekly projections than many other systems. But they aren’t perfect: they are blind to a few factors, such as…...
