Are the Bay Area’s Finest Moving Toward the NFL’s Promised Land or the Retirement Home? The Best and Worst Picks on the San Francisco 49ers

Kevin Szafraniec wraps up his deep dive into the NFC West by identifying the best and worst picks on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster in 2026 best ball drafts.

It feels like forever ago that Kyle Shanahan finally got his first shot to follow in his father’s footsteps as an NFL head coach, after being touted as one of the hottest young offensive minds in Atlanta. The younger Shanahan has certainly done right by his family during his time in the Bay Area, playing in two Super Bowls and making the playoffs more often than not since taking over in 2017.

But after nearly a decade, Shanahan is more of a grizzled veteran in league coaching circles than a new kid on the block. And like their head coach, the 49ers’ roster certainly isn’t getting any younger.

San Francisco currently has the second-oldest roster in the league (per Spotrac), with an average age of 27.0 years. What’s even worse is that every single one of the 49ers’ marquee names is past that threshold, save for 2025 first-round pick Mykell Williams, who wasn’t exactly a standout in Year 1.

With their championship window in danger of slamming shut, is this the year the 49ers use their veteran savvy to deliver a Lombardi Trophy, or are the elder statesmen in San Francisco already past their prime?

In this series, we will focus on best ball ADP from the FFPC slim format, which features 20-round drafts, tight-end premium scoring (1.5 points per TE reception and 1.0 PPR for all other positions), and starting lineups consisting of one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, and two standard flex spots.
