Turn Your Best Ball Drafts Into a Money Machine With These Unpopular RB Tactics

In Lesson 6, we looked at all of the best two-round starts in best ball. Given what we know about RB dominance in 2019, the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches were surprising. In today’s Lesson 7 of the 2020 Best Ball Workshop, Shawn Siegele examines the key RB tactics throughout your draft, including the sweet spots for selecting your RB3 and RB4.

It’s Best Ball Week on RotoViz. The guru himself, Mike Beers, appeared on RotoViz Overtime and broke down all of the key tactics for dominating your leagues. Among the topics he discussed, Mike explained how to use the FFPC Command Center to balance your exposures and anticipate your opponents’ moves. If you haven’t played with the tool, make sure to check him out on the pod. Once you hear him describe the features, you’ll be ready to run out and sign up for multiple FFPC leagues.

This is also Best Ball Week from a draft perspective. Pat Thorman’s MFL10 of Death VII is currently drafting, and I’ll have a full 20-round breakdown for you as part of the Workshop. Jack Miller is running our FFPC mock. Jack has been on fire lately, and he’ll have the results for you soon. Hasan Rahim is running a RotoViz MFL10, a draft loaded with our best ball experts, while the world’s best commish, John Solis, heads up the Justice For George Charity Invitational.

With all that excitement, it’s time we cover the glamour position in the Best Ball Workshop.

RB Tactics Dominate Best Ball Formats, But They’re Not As Straightforward As They Appear

In Lesson 7, we’ll use the Fanball Roster Construction Explorer to help you dominate your BestBall10s.

The Basics

RB Results (2015-2019)

Before we get into specific constructions, it’s easy to see that 5- and 6-RB builds are the most successful in a vacuum. Drafting too few RBs hasn’t been a big issue for owners, and occasionally works. Mike Beers’ 3-RB, hyperfragile approach has been very fragile (41.6% in top six) but matches the best win rate.

On the other hand, drafting too many RBs has been a problem. Almost 50,000 owners have selected seven RBs or more. If you can simply avoid this pitfall, you’re on your way to best-ball success.

The picture gets much more complicated, however, if you want to take your game from competent to elite. There are multiple ways to win, but the best and worst tactics are often surprising.
