Shawn Siegele finished No. 2 overall in the 2021 FFPC Best Ball Tournament and reached the finals of the 2022 FFPC Superflex Tournament (both with his Overtime co-host Colm Kelly). Now he looks at what the Roster Construction Explorer tells you about winning in 2023.

The original FFPC Superflex tournament has filled, but not to worry. Superflex 2 offers a $10,000 grand prize in a relatively small field tournament at the low price of a $35 entry. This has been one of my favorite formats to play over the last several years, and the insights from our best ball tools make it a slam dunk for RV subscribers.

The Superflex stands at the intersection of a couple of interesting trends. Elite QBs have gotten extremely expensive, while RBs have underperformed. They now look poised to deliver 2016 level dominance . . . or crash and burn.

As best ball has evolved over recent years, drafters have learned to be more suspicious of RB-heavy builds. An Anchor RB will often help, and a double-anchor can be successful in the right format and the right year – if you wait quite a while on your RB3.

But true RB-heavy teams post terrible win rates, and most of the community has backed off that approach.

The FFPC Is a Great Format for RB-Heavy But Not Quite Good Enough

Looking specifically at the FFPC Best Ball Slim format, we see that a double-anchor start has delivered average win rates and few top teams.

2-RB in First 3 Rounds (2021-2022)

If drafters start RB-heavy but then wait on the RB3, it helps quite a bit.

2-RB in First 3, RB3 After Round 7 (2021-222)

We now have very good results for drafters who selected no more than six RBs total.

Unfortunately, for drafters who decided to add a third RB early, the results were catastrophic.

3 RBs in First 4 Rounds (2021-22)

The RB-heavy approach was quite a bit more popular, which helps to explain why this format has been so much fun for RV subscribers.
