High Staked: Notes from Week 6

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season. I’m taking the easy way out this week: notes from a full Sunday of NFL football, which, for me, started at around 8 a.m., because 6:30 a.m. is way too early to get up on a Sunday:1 To how many of you does this pattern apply? Week 1: D.J. Chark scores 24.6 points. He’s not on anyone’s roster, so you pick him up off waivers. Week 2: Chark scores 18.5 on your bench. You think, Hmm, interesting, but if I start him in Week 3, he won’t do anything…....

Bracket Busting: In This Episode, Our Team Goes HAM

High-stakes writers Monty Phan and John Lapinski chronicle their entry in the FFPC Super Bracket contest. Previously, on RotoViz: John Lapinski was paranoid that our Super Bracket opponent, who had yet to swap out three bye-week players from his lineup, would still somehow beat us, while I lamented that my high-stakes teams failed to cash in on the scoring bonanza that resulted in the rare 200-point scoring week for a multitude of teams. On this week’s episode: We were both wrong. Actually, I already knew when I wrote that previous post that our Super Bracket team had eclipsed 200 points,…...

High Staked: Gettin’ Gesicki Wit It

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season. So, yeah, it’s come to this. I think we’re starting Mike Gesicki this week. In the perfect encapsulation of our season so far, our FFPC Super Bracket team has to bench our starting tight end, Evan Engram, because the Giants play tonight and he couldn’t recover quickly enough from his knee injury to suit up on a short week but also probably doesn’t want to get murdered by the Patriots defense. Our other potential starter, Darren Waller, is on bye. That leaves either Gesicki or someone off the barren…...

High Staked: Fuller Throttle

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season. Let me start off by saying that neither of our FFPC Main Event teams nor our lone Super Bracket squad had any of the following, either in our lineup or on our bench: Will Fuller (53.7 points in FFPC scoring); Aaron Jones (49.2); Christian McCaffrey (47.7); or Deshaun Watson (46). We did have Michael Thomas and his 41.2 points on one team. Yay for us! In FFPC scoring, 40 points is pretty rare. Eclipsing 50 points is almost unheard of. Yet in Week 5, five guys posted 40 or more…...

High Staked: Down in a Hole

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season. More than a third of the 11-week FFPC Main Event regular season is in the books, and I am depressed. Things have gone poorly. In one Main Event league, we’re 2-2 and third to last in points. We’re also 2-2 in our other league, but in a virtual tie for last in points. In that league, the points leader is seventh overall in the entire contest. That team has nearly 50% more points than we do. In that league, we picked fourth. The points leader picked third. He did…...

High Staked: An Airing of Grievances

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season. I didn’t think I could see a worse score for a starting quarterback than the 0.9 points that Drew Brees recorded for our Main Event team two weeks ago when he injured his thumb. Then we started Case Keenum. That pretty much set the tone for our day in fantasy. But that was just for one of our FFPC Main Event teams. For the other Main Event team, the tone was set on Thursday, with this: That was based on this wonderful analysis that I provided to my three…...

Bracket Busting: Chark Week

High-stakes writers Monty Phan and John Lapinski chronicle their entry in the FFPC Super Bracket contest. Here’s an interesting stat: Through the first three weeks, D.J. Chark is the overall WR8 in FFPC scoring. Here’s another interesting stat: Through the first three weeks, Chark has been in our starting lineup exactly zero times. And here’s an interesting side note: Last year, someone named a team Baby Chark, and now every time I see his name, I get that godforsaken song stuck in my head. Dee … Jay … CHARK doo doo, doo doo doo-doo!1 That second stat likely changes this…...

High Staked: In Case (Keenum) of Emergency

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season. When my three friends and I drafted our FFPC Main Event online team three weeks ago, none of us expected to be debating whether or not to pick up Case Keenum to be our Week 4 starter. After all, we drafted Drew Brees, who had only missed one game due to injury in his 13-year Saints career entering 2019. Our backup was the popular sleeper pick Sam Darnold. Then in Week 2, Brees injured the thumb on his throwing hand, and Darnold was ruled inactive after contracting mononucleosis. Neither…...

High Staked: My Dad Laughed at the Absurdity of My Fantasy Football Angst and He Was Right To Do So

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season. Like it is for a lot of people, the person most responsible for getting me into football is my dad. There is an infamous story in my family about the time when my mom needed to be taken to the hospital to give birth to my younger sister in 1979 and my dad tried to put it off as long as possible because Monday Night Football was on. My dad lives with me and my family now, and you could say that if he’s the Dr. Frankenstein of football-watching,…...

High Staked: Here’s To You, Mr. Robinson

Veteran high stakes fantasy football player Monty Phan chronicles his season. There are times when I feel like this column may be more useful if I gave waiver wire advice before bidding ends every Wednesday night instead of writing about the aftermath on Thursday. But do you want to know the truth? When it comes to waiver bids, no one really knows anything. Take this week’s potential waiver savior: Chiefs wide receiver Demarcus Robinson. I added Robinson everywhere I could during the summer when Tyreek Hill faced a potential suspension. Then I dropped him when Hill was cleared to play…...
